The Hering illusion

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 10:16 am

Been reading a lot about the Hering illusion recently. This is a really cool trick to play on your mind and vision. Below is an example of this so called Hering Illusion, which is a famous optical illusion discovered by the German physiologist Ewald Hering in 1861. The way the illusion works is that it tricks our minds into thinking we are moving forward. Since we aren’t actually moving and the figure is static, we misperceive the straight lines as curved bowed ones:

Another illusion is the Orbison illusion which is a variant of the Hering. Even though the bounding rectangle and the red square inside are perfectly symetrical, the background makes it appear as if it is distorted since it tricks our brains into thinking there is perspective involved.
