At 3:26 pm Eastern Standard time US Airways Flight 1549 crashed into the Hudson River right in the smack of New York City. The airplane had 150 passengers and 5 crew members on board, and crashed shortly after takeoff en route to Charlotte from LaGuardia airport in New York.
Miraculously everyone survived the crash into the frigid Hudson river. The Temperature outside was a very cold twenty degrees with water temperatures in the 40′s. Passengers on Flight 1549 stood on the wings waiting for ferries and coast guard boats to pick them up. Witnesses stated that the plane hit a flock of birds shortly after takeoff, and amazingly made the landing into the Hudson river look easy. Eyewitness’s thought this was some sort of movie set, but in fact the Us Airways jet was really in trouble.
Pinero said the plane’s captain came on the speaker and said, ” ‘Brace for impact.’ ”
“That’s when we knew we were going down and into the water,” Pinero said. Pinero said rescue boats arrived almost immediately.
“I think a lot of people started praying and just collecting themselves,” passenger Fred Barretta said. “It was quite stunning.”
US Airways is currently confirming passenger and crew names and will issue those as soon as possible. Individuals who believe they may have family members on board Us Airways flight 1549 may call US Airways at 1-800-679-8215. News reports however claim that there are no serious injuries. Hopefully it stays this way. We gotta give credit to the pilot and co pilot of this plane, as they clearly saved over 150 lives by acting quickly and skillfully.
