librivox
Every day or two I try and profile a website that is purely a great idea. Like I said before there are hundreds of internet startups launching each and every day, but only a few which are worth checking out. In this case, LibriVox is worth checking out.

LibriVox takes advantage of the books in the public domain. Any book published before the year 1923 is in the public domain meaning it is free to reproduce and use at will. How Librivox uses these books is in a way thats unique to any other internet site otu there. They have volunteers read them aloud and record them, thus making the book free to listen to for whoever wishes to do so. Thus far LibriVox has recorded 1,500 books in the public domain. Their goal according to their website is to record every single book in the public domain and make them free for internet users worldwide to listen to. The majority of LibriVox source texts come from Project Gutenberg, and there are said to be close to 1,800 volunteers recording books for them.

The site is located at http://librivox.org/
