Ok, I know gasoline prices are a killer, especially if you are driving more then just a few miles to work each day. We’ve heard a lot about cars that will reach 100, 150, 200, and even 300 mpg, but have yet to see them go mainstream. Hopefully by the beginning of 2009 we will, and thus gas prices as well as the environment will be saved.
A Company called AFS Trinity has built a hybrid system which achieves close to 150 mpg (mile per gallon) of gasoline. What AFS Trinity has done is built their hybrid system into the Saturn Vue Hybrid. They have done it to two prototypes thus far, and say that such a system will run only about $8,600 over normal hybrid vehicle costs. $8,600 is nothing for another 100 mpg of gasoline. That price will be made up for in just a couple year of driving the vehicles with this enhanced hybrid system. Furia, AFS Trinity’s chief executive officer, speculates that other electric car makers have been stumped because the lithium ion batteries that usually power those cars may wear out too quickly. AFS Trinity has worked around this battery problem by adding ultra capacitors to its batteries. These devices deliver little bursts of energy, powering the car when it accelerates and protecting the battery at the same time. Below is an image of the Saturn Vue prototype.
