The 21 year old Jamaican, Usain Bolt has broken the world record for the 100m (100 meter) track and field event. Bolt’s time of 9.72 seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix meeting in New York broke the previous record of 9.74 seconds set by compatriot Asafa Powell. The amazing thing about this race was it was only Bolts fifth race at this distance, yet he still managed to knock 0.02 seconds off the record time.
When asked if he thought he was going to break the record for the 100m, or had a chance at the record, a confident Usain Bolt stated: “I had an idea (the record was on) because I ran in Trinidad and I ran pretty bad and still ran 9.92, so I was pretty confident coming here.”
