The Phoenix lander has made it to Mars guys! And there are some stunning pictures coming in already. After a 300 day journey in which the lander traveled over 675,000 Kilometers, it has finally made it to the surface of mars in one piece.
It will now begin 90 days of digging to look for the possible existence of water on the planet, both now and in the past. It will study whether the ice melted during a time in Mars’ recent past and will check soil samples for traces of organic compounds, which would be a possible indicator of conditions necessary for life. Phoenix is not equipped to detect past or present alien life, but the presence of water could indicate that life once existed on Mars.
