So I was just watching the National Spelling bee, and the host of the Bee, Dr. Bailly pronounced the next word with a totally straight face. “Numnut” I thought, and so did nearly everyone one in attendance he said. The word was then repeated. Numnah it was. The crowd all starting cracking up with laughter. This made my night, as juvenile as it may seem.
Numnah for those wondering is a sheepskin placed on a horse’s back to prevent chafing. What even made this situation funnier is that when Sameer Mishra of Indiana, the contestant given the word, was asked by the reported what his first reaction was to thinking the word was numnut, he answered: I was sooo relieved when I realized that it was numnah, because numb nut can be spelled in sooo many different ways.
